From the beginning of the geological researches of the Japanese Islands, the structural differences between East and West Japan have called attention of many geologists. In the earlier days, the Fossa Magna of E. NAUMANN was considered to be the boundary zone between East and West Japan. Afterwards, the Kanto-Koshin'etsu region, including the Fossa Magna, has been regarded, for the most part, as a boundary area between East and West Japan, and is also considered as a joining part of the Honshu Arc and the Shichito Arc by many geologists. Recently, some ideas are presented on the relation of the surface structure to the deeper structure of this area.
