Based on equations of first-order chemical reactions by analogy with cracking processes, HUCK and KARWEIL habe presumed the chemical reaction model of coal during burial metamorphism, and have expressed coalification process in a single diagram, on which coal volatile matter, temperature and burial time are plotted. Because the reaction rate predicted by them, however, is thought not always adequate, once too fast, once too slow, and a lot of data on burial metamorphism of coal area fterwards accumulated, BOSTICK has modified the KARWEIL's 1956 coalification graph. In order to draw the burial history of the following coal basins in Northwest Kyushu more in detail, reflectance of the Yonshaku coal seam in Amakusa coal field, of the Shingoshaku coal seam in Takashima and of the Honso coal seam in Miike are measured as a indicator of coalification grade, and these values are analysed geohistorically using the BOSTICK's diagram. Since measured and calculated reflectamce values in each coalfield are precisely coinside with each other, graphic burial history, Fig. 3-5 could be evaluated as quite proper ones.
