The Chugoku Province is divided by two major faults, the Nagato Tectonic Line and the Maizuru Belt, into three geological zones; the northern region of the Nagato Tectonic Line, the region between the Nagato Tectonic Line and the Maizuru Belt and the southern region of the Maizuru Belt. The Quaternary basaltic rocks which occur in the three zones, give the following petrochemical features of volcanic rocks series and ultramafic xenolith in basalts: 1) The basaltic rocks and their xenoliths in the northern region of the Nagato Tectonic Line are alkaline, calcalkaline and tholelitic series. Thexenolith contains various kinds of ultramafic rocks, such as spinel-lherzolite, harzburgite, dunite, wehrlite, websterite and pyroxenite, 2) None of the tholeiitic series is found in the basaltic rocks from the region between the Nagato Tectonic Line and the Maizuru Belt. The presence of megacryst pyroxenes is a remarkable feature in this region. 3) In southern region of the Maizuru Belt, only the calcalkallne series is present in the basaltic rocks but none of xenolith is found.
