A study was undertaken on the age changes of nerve fibers supplying the root of human teeth. A total of 301 healthy human teeth was used for the preparation of cross and sagittal sections of root at the site of 1 mm from its apex. The sections were stained by silver impregnation and hematoxylin-eosin double staining methods. Observation was also made on the general aspects of other tissues within the pulp canal and possible relation between the age changes of the nerve fibers and other tissues was discussed. Results were summarized as follows. 1) The cross sections of the nerve fibers at root apex showed bundles of large and small sizes in the teeth of younger subjects. In the teeth of older subjects, however, the bundles tended to be gradually disintegrated and the nerve fibers appeared to become separated individually. 2) The size of the nerve fibers was mostly fine in the teeth of younger subjects, mostly large in those of adult, and mostly fine again in those of older people. 3) Amount of total nerve tissues of tooth pulp seemed to decrease more or less with advancing age of subjects. 4) The way in which the nerve fibers run within tooth pulp was found generally the same with the findings as reported by previous workers except in the type I teeth of young subjects where most of the nerve fibers were made up into bundles through the entire course and branched as such to reach and fill up the pulp horn. Presence of isolated single nerve fibers were relatively sparse. 5) The nerve fibers entering into the predentin were few in number in teeth of young subjects but were rich in teeth of older subjects. This was also confirmed in the predentin of root in the teeth of older subjects. 6) Many of the nerve fibers ascending the root part of the pulp were seen sometimes to turn around backward or to form ring-shape halfway. 7) After 20 years of age of subjects various signs of degeneration made their appearance in the pulp tissues and the rate of the occurrence increased with advancing age of subjects. 8) In the Ist type of pulpal nerve at the root apex, the nerve tissues were relatively healthy while in teeth that belonged to the 3rd type, the nerve tissues showed a marked degeneration. 9) Even in those pulp tissues where vacuolar degeneration and reticular atrophy predominated, there were fine nerve fibers that were kept intact and reached the layer of odontoblasts. 10) Higher degree of pulpal nerve degeneration was observed in those parts of pulp tissues where hyaline and calcareous degeneration took place.
