In providing prosthesis for the cases where occlusal contact of natural teeth is missing, restoring an appropriate dimension is one of the most difficult steps. In determining vertical dimension, esthetics must be taken into consideration as well as physiological functional kinetics. Various studies from the standpoint of esthetics have been made on the Japanese face. For most of these studies, however, dentulous persons in their twenties were used as subjects. Applying the characteristics themselves of the anatomical face of young persons whose physiological functions and facial characteristics are different as facial characteristics for edentulous persons is not necessarily apppropriate. In order to obtain information in detail of esthetic characteristics of the face, facial measurements were taken on frontal and lateral pictures with subjects grouped into dentulous adult in their twenties group (100 each, male and female), over 55 year dentulous aged group (25 each, male and female), and partial or full denture wearer without occlusal contact between natural teeth group (17 males and 23 females). The results were as follows : 1. Between the dentulous adult group and dentulous aged group, no signifficant differences were found in any item, male, or female in the averages of biocular breadth, interpupillary distance, nasal breadth, mouth breadth, externalocular angle-labial point distance, and subnasal point-submental point distance. 2. Between the esthetically satisfied denture wearer group and dentulous aged group, no significant differences in average were found in biocular breadth, interpupillary distance, nasal breadth, mouth breadth, externalocular angle-labial point distance, and subnasal pointsubmental point distance. The esthetic characteristics reported to date were found to be applicable to the patients with multiple tooth loss. 3. As compared with the dentulous adult group, dentulous aged group, or esthetically satisfied denture wearer group, the esthetically dissatisfied denture wearer group had significantly wider mouth breadth and significantly shorter subnasal point-submental point distance. 4. It is said that the position of the upper canines and the width of the upper anterior teeth can be determined by nasal breadth and mouth breadth as references. For denture weares, however, the vertical dimension of the denture is likely to affect mouth breadth. It was therefore suggested that nasal breadth which is the immobile point may be a better reference than mouth breadth. 5. For dentulous adults, the tip point of the upper lip was 0.6±2.3mm short for male and 0.7±2.8mm for female short of E-line. For dentulous aged group, 0.7±2.6mm short for male and 0.5±2.8mm short for female. They approximated the values for the dentulous adults in their twenties. The fact that E-line and the tip point of the upper lip nearly coincide was found to be one of the esthetic characteristics for Japanese regardless of age.
