• Condylar path and dentitional path must be in harmony during functioning. The oral function closely related to articulation is masticatory movement. It is therefore important, in clinical prosthesis, to investigate relation between condylar path and dentitional path during mastication. With a view to clarifying functional harmony between condylar path and dentitional path, observation was made, with 30 adult males and females with normal occlusion as subjects, of condylar path in lateral border movement and of characteristics of occlusal facet on working side, both of which are said to be closely related to mastication. The results were as follows : 1. Frequency of cuspid protected occlusion (C.P.O.) and group functioned occlusion (G.F.O.) was 51.7% and 48.3%, respectively. 2. An average number of the occlusal facet per jaw was 6.7±2.3 in C.P.O. and 7.7±2.2 in G.F.O.. The latter tended to be greater. 3. Frequency of appearance of the effective occlusal facet was 18.0% in C.P.O. and 52.4% in G.F.O.. 4. Sliding distance of the effective occlusal facet in G.F.O. was greater than that of the non-effective occlusal facet in G.F.O. except for 3 in 14 facets and that of the occlusal facet in C.P.O.. 5. Actual inclination of the effective occlusal facet for the posterior occlusal facet in G.F.O. tended to be greater for a tooth more posteriorly positioned except for 1 in 7 facets. 6. Displacement distance of condylar path was 5.0±1.0mm in C.P.O. and 4.6±1.0mm in G.F.O., showing no significant difference between the two. 7. Actual condylar inclination was 39.8±5.9° in C.P.O. and 38.5±6.6° in G.F.O., showing no significant difference between the two. 8. Inclination of the occlusal facet of the cuspid related to guidance was smaller than that of condylar inclination in C.P.O. and G.F.O.. 9. In G.F.O., posterior occlusal facet rather than anterior occlusal facet was suggested to be closely related to lateral border movement.
