Factors contributing to dental caries prevalence of permanent teeth were analyzed by t test, x^2 test, and quantification types I and II for school children (312) in Fukuoka, Japan, and those (302) in Taipei, Formosa. The results were as follows : 1. Comparison of dental caries prevalence 1) The percentage of the subjects with one or more DMF teeth was 98.08% for Fukuoka and 99.01% for Taipei, showing no significant difference. However, DMFS was 11.67±7.22 for Fukuoka and 15.40±8.41 for Taipei, showing a significant difference. 2) The percentage of the teeth treated for caries was 36.79% for Fukuoka and 6.48% for Taipei, showing a significant difference. 2. Comparison of intake of snacks and beverages 1) The snacks ranking high in consumption were : ice cream in 205 subjects (65.71%) and potato chips in 169 (54.17%) for Fukuoka, and cookies in 162 (53.64%) and candies in 100 (33.11%) for Taipei. 2) The beverages ranking high in consumption were : milk in 203 (65.06%) and tea in 168 (53.85%) for Fukuoka and soft drinks in 226 (74.83%) and fruit juice in 191 (63.25%) for Taipei. 3. Analysis by quantification type I of factors contributing to dental caries prevalence For Fukuoka, 'housework only' was the highest in the partial correlation coefficient and 'taking a hobby lesson or taking a course of study' followed. The multiple correlation coefficient with 10 variables was 0.305. For Taipei, 'oral hygiene condition' was the highest in the partial correlation coefficient and 'preference for sweets' followed. The multiple correlation coefficient with 10 variables was 0.334. 4. Analysis by quantification type II of factors contributing to dental caries prevalence of anterior teeth. For Fukuoka, 'frequency of intake of beverages' was the highest in the partial correlation coefficient and the overall correlation ratio was 0.104. For Taipei, 'oral hygiene condition' was the highest in the partial correlation coefficient and the overall correlation ratio was 0.070. 5. Analysis by quantification type II of dental caries prevalence of lateral teeth For Fukuoka, 'frequency of tooth brushing' was the highest in the partial correlation coefficient and the overall correlation ratio was 0.035. For Taipei, 'oral hygiene condition' was the highest in the partial correlation coefficient and the overall correlation ratio was 0.085.
