Mental and physical disturbances exert a harmful influence upon the development of not only constitution but also oral traits. However the relations in the oral traits among the mentally deficients and between the normal and deficient adults are still unclear. For the present paper, morphological investigations of the dental arch and the palate were made on the plaster-casts from 62 mental disturbance inmates and 114 normal adults in Kitakyushu. The results were as follows : I. The comparison between the dependent-trainable group and educable-dull normal group : All the items of the dental arch and the palate showed no differences between two groups. II. The comparison between the mental dificiency inmates (inmates group) and normal control group : 1. Dental arch length : All the items of the inmates group were shorter than those of the normal control group, especially lower anterior dental arch length. 2. Dental arch breadth : All the items except for upper anterior dental arch breadth of the inmates group were narrower than those of the normal control group, especially lower anterior dental arch breadth. 3. Dental arch index : All the items except for upper anterior-posterior dental arch breadth index of the inmates group showed lower rates than those of the normal control group, especially anterior-posterior dental arch length indices and upper anterior dental arch index. 4. Length of the dental arch : All the items showed no differences between the two groups. 5. Palatal height, Palatal height index and Length of sutura palatina mediana : All the items of the inmates group were higher than those of the normal control group, especially anterior palatal height, anterior palatal height index, anterior-posterior palatal height index and length of sutura palatina mediana. 6. Palatal arch lenght : All the items of inmates group except for the 2nd molar region were higher than those of the normal control group, especially canine region and 1st and 2nd premolar region. 7. Palatal breadth : All the items of the inmates group were higher than those of the normal control group, especially 1st and 2nd premolar region. 8. Mandibular alveolor breadth : All the items of the inmates group were narrower than those of the normal control group, especially canine region. This investigation revealed that there are great differences between the inmates group and the normal control group in their oral traits.
