Hypervitaminosis was induced in young rats and histopathological changes were investigated. The results were as follows : 1. In the two groups injected with either 2, 000 I.U. or 5, 000 I.U. of vitamine A each day, a decrease in the weight-increase-rate, and such systemic changes as loss of appetite, bleeding of eyelids, and transformation of limbs were observed in both groups. 2. In the 2, 000 I.U./day injection group, pyknosis, atrophy, and vacuolation of the serous terminal acinous cells in the submandibular gland occurred from the second week on. In the third and fourth weeks, enlargement of the mucous acini and atrophy of the intercalated portions and the ducts, in addition, were observed. 3. In the 2, 000 I.U./day injection group, vacuolation, pyknosis, and atrophy of the terminal acinous cells in the parotid gland occurred from the second week on. These changes spread with time in the parotid gland. 4. In the 5, 000 I.U./day injection group, atrophy and vacuolation of the serous terminal acinous cells in the submandibular gland occurred from the first week on. These changes spread in the submandibular gland in the third and fourth weeks. Changes such as atrophy were observed in the intercalated portions and the ducts, and destruction of the duct walls and blockade of the intercalated portions were also observed in the third and fourth weeks. Enlargement of the mucous glands followed and was observed about in the third week. 5. with regard to the sublingual gland, only in the 5, 000 I.U./day injection group in the fourth week, atrophy of the mucous acini and hypertrophy and proliferation of the demilune were observed. 6. In the 5, 000 I.U./day injection group, atrophy and vacuolation of the acini and atrophy of the ducts were observed about in the first week. These changes spread thereafter in the parotid gland. 7. On the basis of the foregoing findings, hypervitaminosis was found to cause various histopathological changes in the salivary glands. Their trigger mechanism, however, could not be determined.
