Selection of appropriate artificial teeth and natural looking setup are important in prosthesis of anterior teeth. The form of the tooth crown changes with aging as a result of incisal attrition and gingival recession. Providing artificial dentitions with such characteristics, therefore, is essential. A study on changes with aging in front view of the upper anterior teeth, therefore, has been made with 66 adult males, 22 to 57 in age, with individual normal occlusion. Prosthetic plane was adopted as the base plane and a Nikon Profile Projector was used for measuring. The results were as follows : 1. Of the reference points for the upper anterior teeth in front view, point G (the deepest point of gingival margin) and point IP (the uppermost point of interdental papilla) tend to be displaced upward gradually with aging. 2. Vertical position of each point IEA (incisal embrasure apex) was approximate for each age level. Its position was stabilized in the space 1.3mm to 2.1mm above the vertical base line. 3. Horizontal positions of point I (incisal point), point G, and point X (point where tooth crown-midline distance is maximum) were about the same. The ratio of distances to the adjacent point X (front view width of each tooth crown 1__-, 2__-, 3__-) was nearly 100 : 74 : 65, approximating the value measured by Hori. 4. Projective area of each tooth crown increased with aging. The lateral incisor and the canine were similar in area although the former showed slightly greater values throughout each age level. The values were about 60% of the area of the central incisor. 5. The area of gingival embrasure tended to increase slightly with aging. Little change with aging, however, was observed for the incisal embrasure. 6. When a dentition with an artificial left central incisor of 8.5mm width setup was compared with the natural dentition of an adult male in 50's, the dentition with Square Type artificial teeth was most approximate to the natural dentition in the vertical and horizontal positions of each reference point and the dentition with Taper Type artificial teeth in tooth crown projective area. 7. In comparison of the front view of the upper anterior teeth with the axis orbital plane as the base plane and that with the prosthetic plane as the base plane, hardly any change was observed in area and in horizontal position of each reference point. The vertical position of each point, however, was displaced upward by about 0.5mm for the lateral incisor and by about 1.0mm for the canine.
