The distribution of the nerve fiber of the rat's temporomandibular joint and its periphery from 1st day to 300th day after birth was investigated histologically. The following results were obtained. 1. Judging from nerve endings type, most of nerve fibers distributed in the temporomandibular joint and its periphery are sensory nerve fibers. 2. In the soft tissue of the temporomandibular joint regions of the young rat, many nerve fibers were distributed. But connective tissue became fibrose tissue when the rat matured, nerve fibers were well distributed only in the sorrounding connective tissue which had many fat cells. There were few nerves in the articular capsule. 3. Most of nerve fibers distributed in the temporomandibular joint and its periphery wavelike nerve fibers wound. It seems that this winding is a defensive form against tissue's expansion and contraction caused by jaw movement. 4. The nerve fibers distributed in the temporomandibular joint and its periphery entered from the front and the lower back of the condyle. 5. In many cases, the nerve fibers distributed in the temporomandibular joint and its periphery accompanied with blood vessels. 6. In the condyle, the nerve fibers distributed in the external fibrous layer and the periosteum were observed. 7. In the articular disc, most nerve fibers were observed on about 30th day after birth. They entered from the front and the back of the articular capsule and all of them terminated as the free nerve endings. There were no nerve fibers in the central constricted part. 8. In the articular capsule, all nerve endings were non-capsulated, and they were only free nerve endings of branched or of non-branched. 9. In the specimen of 30-day-old rat, there were a few capsulated glomerular endings in the connective tissue of lower part of the inside articular capsule.
