In the cervicothoracic region and upper extremities, stellate ganglion blockade is known to act as a selective sympathetic block, but, its effect on sympathetic nerve activity in other regions has noto yet been established. In this study, we examined muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) in the tibial nerve using direct intraneural microneurogtaphy during stellate ganglion blockade in 10 healthy human male volunteers. MSNA was recorded by a tungsten microelectrode from the left tibial nerve. MSNA, heart rate, and blood pressure were monitored bothe before and during left stellate ganglion blockade induced by 7 ml of 1% mepivacaine. MSNA in the tibial nerve was markedly activated despite sympathetic blocking induced by the stellate ganglion blockade. This outcome may be due to blockage of the vagus nerve from arterial baroreceptors in the aortic arch or the activation of central sympathetic outflow.
