This article surveys how the Coase theorem has been used in the field of 'Law and Economics'. The Coase theorem states that a Pareto efficient allocation will be achieved through a voluntary bargaining among agents, and that the law, especially the property law, is related to a transaction cost of private bargaining. This theorem has been often used, but little formulated yet. It is necessary to describe the contents of Coase theorem in the more formal form for developing various researches in 'Law and Economics'. We present a noncooperative bargaining game model, which was introduced by Rubinstein (1982), to formulate the Coase theorem. This formulation will enable us to clarify the transaction cost of bargaining under the law.
