Consciousness-Raising about Environmental in the Language Learning Classroom

This paper report on how 'global education,' one of the most exciting area of language teaching, could be introduced into an EFL setting of a Japanese private high school. One field of 'global education'-environmental education-was selected as the focal point in this paper. the actual study was conducted recently at Kyoai Gakuen Girls' Senior High School. One class of the third-year students in an English as a foreign language program served as subjects for this study. The study was focused on language activities, especially reading ones, which were intended to see how they got along with the content of 'environmental issues.' In fact the students seemed to be aware of the existence of dreadful issues even in a few lesson. In the end, half of them articulate that they try to tackle the issues on the activist basis in the future. Some implications of classroom observations are discussed in this paper.
