Herbert's indebtedness to the Psalms for devices and themes has been emphasized but the characteristics of his adaptations of the Psalms have not been elucidated. And it is surprising that the specific nature of the influence of the Sidneian Psalms upon Herbert has not been thoroughly investigated, though critics have recognized the close approximation between them. The influence of the Psalms upon Herbert reflects itself in the fact that the Word of God confirms and deepens his religious faith. In other words, the Word leads him to aspire after God and to embrace Christianity. Next God, Herbert loves what God himself has magnifiedabove all, that is, his Word. Threfore, Herbert shows rather a positive attitude towards rhetoric derived from the Psalms unless it is gaudy. Sir Philip Sidney, who paraphrased the Psalms and had the same attitude towards rhetoric must have been a precedent for Herbert. The Sidneian Psalms is, in this sense, a flame which illuminates the mind of Herbert clouded with rhetoric.
