A highly sensitive method for the determination of trace impurities in high purity Al has been studied. After separation of Al by distillation as triethylalumiuium, impurity metals were determined simultaneously by ICP-AES. A high purity Al sample (3 to 10 g) is weighed in a flask, and 30 to 100 ml of ethyl bromide are added. The flask is heated to dissolve the sample with a condenser attached to the upper part of the flask. Al is then distilled in a form of triethylaluminium at 60℃ under the pressure at 5 Torr or lower. Impurities remaining in the flask are dissolved with a mixture of HCl and HNO_3. By the proposed method, Fe, Cu, Ti, Ca, Mn, Mg, V, Ni, Zn, Cr, Be, B, Sb, Bi, Sn and Pb at the level of greater than 0.05 μg/g in the high purity Al were determined by ICP-AES with R. S. D. less than 15%.
