A rapid, simple, and accurate method was developed for the determination of cyanide ion in aqueous solution by gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector. Cyanide ion was separated by steam distillation into an alkaline solution according to the method of Japanese Industrial Standard. Then 9 ml of this alkaline distillate (0.1 M NaOH solution) was taken in a 10-ml test tube with a ground-glass stopper and mixed with 1 ml of 1 M formic acid. The resulting solution (about pH 4.6) was directly subjected to gas chromatography for determining hydrogen cyanide. A sharp and symmetrical peak of hydrogen cyanide was observed on Porapak Q as column packings. A linear relationship was observed between the peak area and the concentration of cyanide ion in the range of 5〜100μg/ml, and the relative standard deviation (5 determinations) were less than 3 % for these solutions. The detection limit was 1 ng/ml. Interferences of sulfide, thiosulfate, and sulfite ions, and benzaldehyde, acetone, ethyl methyl ketone, and methanol were negligible, but that of formaldehyde was significant, and acetaldehyde slightly interfered. The present method was applied to the determination of cyanide ion produced by enzymatic hydrolysis of cyanogenic glycosides in beans. The values determined by the present method agreed very closely with those obtained by the pyridine-pyrazolone spectrophotometric method.
