Adsorption characteristics of copper, zinc, lead, and iron ions on activated carbon, using L-ascorbic acid as a complexing agent were investigated. Under the optimized condition, the simultaneous recovery for 4 elements was good enough to apply to the preconcentration in X-ray fluorescence analysis. The procedure was applied to the determination of the trace elements in sea water and the activity of L-ascorbic acid was found to be comparable to that of 8-qinolinol. The detection limits for the analysis were Cu 2.3*g, Zn1.9 *g, Pb 8.4 *g, and Fe 2.3 *g. The coefficients of variation were Cu 2.9%, Zn 2.7%, Pb 5.4%, and Fe 5.5%.
