In the determination of silicon dioxide in regular fused alumina abrasives (containing 1 % SiO_2) by the gravimetric method, mixtures of anhydrous sodium carbonate and boric acid or sodium borate have been used as a flux. The conventional use of considerably large amounts of flux, say to 20 times as much as the sample, permits rapid fusion, but it was found lately that excessively high flux to sample ratios by weight may affect the recovery of silicon dioxide. In this study, the effects of sodium carbonate and boric acid were studied separately and the optimum flux to sample ratio was determined. As a result, while sodium carbonate was found to give little effect, boric acid gave increasingly negative errors with increasing amounts used as flux. For a 0.5 g of regular alumina abrasives sample, the use of (4〜5)g flux having a sodium carbonate to boric acid ratio of 3 to 2 was found to be optimum.
