A system comprising a Curie-point pyrolyzer (CpPy) directly coupled to a capillary gas chromatograph (GC) was applied to a series of model compounds of polymers and textiles in order to elucidate more detailed elemental process of the thermal cleavage of the materials. The first part of this paper concerns the utility of this instrumental tool to be applied to a mixture of stereoisomers in order to detect the possible volume effects on its Py-GC. In the second part, the system was applied to analyze the thermal-cleavage process of a series of linear maltose oligomers and cyclic dextrins as model compounds of polysaccharides. It was found that the formation of levoglucosan residues is a sole characteristic behavior of those polysaccharides, including glucose oligomers. The third part deals with the application of a new technique, called as simultaneous pyrolysis and methylation (SPM), for the abovementioned Py-GC. A characteristic difference was found between pyrograms of cyclic and linear oligosaccharides. The last part relates to experiments concerning a series of polysaccharide derivatives, including typical flame-retardant fibers in commercial use. We could arrive at the conclusion that our findings can reconfirm the elemental process of the thermal cleavage of those materials.
