Results of studies on the separation of uranium isotopes using 1m diameter liquid chromatography columns were compiled and analysed. In the first study, equations for the calculation of the concentration increase of a target species were derived from the generally applied description deeming the square-cascade chromatography as a fine, multi-stage separation process. Further, a basic equation, useful not only in the initial stage but also in the advanced stage of separation, to calculate the amount of separation was derived and examined. In the second study, backmixing which occurs in the equipment and in the packed bed was analyzed. It was proved that an index which is determined by measuring the secondary momentum of a tracer's mixing can be used to express the total height of a theoretical plate of backmixing by adding it to the theoretical plate heights originating from reactions and micro flow dispersion. Experimental data for backmixing observed in the pilot plant for uranium isotope separation show that the difference in the specific gravity of the solutions and the stress in the packed bed have a great influence on backmixing and separation efficiency.
