A new spectrophotometric method for the determination of chromium(VI) has been investigated. Chromium(VI) reacts with sodium 2-bromo-4,5-dihydroxyazobenzene-4´ -sulfonate to form a water-soluble complex, in which the metal may exist in the trivalent state. The reddish violet complex with its absorption maximum at 543 nm is quantitatvely formed in 0.24-0.72 M per-chloric acid solution. A linear calibration curve was obtained over the concentration range 0-16 μg of chromium(VI) in 25 ml. The apparent molar absorptivity is 4.64×10^4 cm^<-1> mol^<-1> 1 at 543 nm. The interference from metal ions such as iron (III), aluminum(III) and zirconium(IV) could be eliminated by the addition of ammonium fluoride. The method has been applied to the determination of chromium in standard steel samples.
