• Manganese is extracted into methyl isobuthyl ketone (MIBK) as a dibenzyldithiocarbamato (DBDTC) complex in the pH range of 5 to 9. The extract was used for the determination of manganese by atomic absorption spectrometry. Analiquot of sample solution containing less than 20 μg of manganese is taken and 1 g of diammonium hydrogen citrate is added. The pH is adjusted to 8 with 6 N ammonia water, and 1O ml of DBDTC solution (0.5%) is added. The mixture is diluted to 50 ml with water, and is shaken with 10.O ml of MIBK for 3 min. The MIBK extract is introduced into an air-acetylene flame and the absorbance is measured at 279.5nm. The tolerance limits for various ions were also examined. The proposed method was applied to the determination of micro amounts of manganese in waste waters and in aluminums.
