Zinc(II) complex of the Schiff base derived from pyridine-2-aldehyde and diethylenetriamine (BPA-Zn) was synthesized and used for spectrophotometric determination of iron(II). The BPA-Zn reacts with iron(II) to form the red complex having an absorption maximum at 525 nm in the presence of a large excess of hydroxylamine. The maximum and constant absorbance of the complex is obtained in the pH range from 5.4 to 6.O. Beer's law holds for 3.5 to 69.8 μg iron in 25ml. The molar absorptivity is 1.24×10^4 cm^<-1>mol^<-1> 1. The proposed method was applied to the determination of total iron in some water samples.
