Although there are several methods to determine inflammable hydrocarbons in water, most of them have some limitations when applied to practical samples such as drainage, because of the presence of interfering substances and complicated procedures. The present report is concerned with a simplified method to determine those hydrocarbons in drainage by using flame ionization detector(FID) setting in a gas chromatograph. Aqueous solution of sample was directly injected into a temperature controlled vaporization part. The vaporized hydrocarbons were passe through a stainless pipe containing no packing material and introduced to FID. The detector response was recorded as a peak. A linear relationship between the peak area and the total weight of hydrocarbons dissolved in drainage was demonstrated with little or no interference by the coexisted substances. Solubility of hydrocarbons to water had no effect on the determination.
