Arsenic, mercury, and selenium in biological standards-U. S. National Bureau of Standards (NBS) Standard Reference Materials SRM-1571 Orchard Leaves and SRM-1577 Bovine Liver-were determined by neutron activation analysis. The nuclear reactions used were ^<75>As (n,γ) ^<76>As, ^<196>Hg (n,γ) ^<197>Hg, and ^<64>Se (n,γ) ^<65>Se. The sample { (0.4〜0.6)g} and the reference standard sealed in quartz tubes were irradiated for 20 min in the JRR-2 reactor (thermal neutron flux : 8×10^<13> n cm^<-2>s^<-1>). After cooling for about 2 days, the irradiated sample was transfered to the decomposition and distillation apparatus. The organic matter was decomposed with a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acids, and then mercury was separated by distillation with perchloric acid and glycine. Arsenic and selenium were distilled with hydrochloric acid and hydrobromic acid. Each element was determined by γ-spectrometry. The contents of the elements found (ppm) were : 15 for arsenic, 0.11 for mercury, 0.09 for selenium in Orchard Leaves ; 0.061 for arsenic, 0.014 for mercury, 1. 3 for selenium in Bovine Liver. These results were in excellent agreement with the NBS certified and/or literature values.
