This study was undertaken to develop an analytical method of propylene carbonate in aqueous solutions. The procedure is as follows: To an aliquot of aqueous solution of propylene carbonate {(10^<-4>〜10^<-7>) mol)} in a 100 ml volumetric flask, is added 20 ml of 1 N sodium hydroxide. After standing for 10 minutes, 10ml of 5 N sulfuric acid is added to the alkaline solution. The acidified solution is then diluted to the mark with water. To an aliquot of this sample solution containing 5 to 45μg of propylene glycol in a 10ml volumetric flask, is added 0.5 ml of 0.5% sodium periodate. After standing for 5 minutes at room temperature, the reaction mixture is added with 5 ml of 5% sodium sulfite, followed by an addition of 5 ml of 0.2% chromotropic acid under stirring. Then the reaction mixture is heated on a boiling water bath for 30 minutes. After cooling, it is diluted to the mark with water and kept for a few minutes in a water bath at 25℃. The absorbance is measured at 570 nm against the reagent blank. Propylene carbonate could be determined by the present method with the coefficient of variation of 0.7%.
