The underlined parts of the following sentences are called parentheticals, parenthetical sentences or parenthetical clauses. l. Tom, and even his mother doesn t know this is proud of his wrists. 2. This I think is his best novel. 3. I think such a committee, if it were to per-form its work efficiently, would have to be small. (0kada(1985), p.167-168)We will focus on the first two types of parentheticals(the independent cluases and the clauses that lack obligatory element), since these show a wide variety of syntactic patterns whereas the other (subordinate) is easy to identify. This paper will describe conditions to restrict the class of these types of parentheticals, which are implemented in PEG(PLNLP English Grammar).
