It is recognized by many investigators that the deamination of serine, threonine and the synthesis of cystathionine are catalysed by the same enzyme. The author revealed the existence of a new enzyme, serine dehydratase in rat liver which is virtually free from the other two enzymes. The crude extract of rat liver was separated to two fractions by 0〜30 and 30〜50% saturation of ammonium sulfate. The latter fraction exhibited mainly the serine dehydratase activity and it was purified to about 60-fold by acetone fractionation and hydroxyl-apatite column chromatography. New serine dehydratase, thus obtained have several characteristics compared with those of the enzyme of other fraction, e.g., Km for substrate and pyridoxal phosphate. Serine dehydratase was also obtained from pig liver as highly purified form (150-fold) and its properties were compared with those of rat liver enzyme.
