Growth of uricase-producing bacteria Brevibacterium vitarumen var. uricum was inhibited by an addition of adenine. Another growth inhibition was also observed when these bacteria were cultured in a glucose-urate medium with methionine or purine bases added. But the growth inhibition by methionine or purine bases was not observed in a glucose-NH_3 medium. It was assumed therefore that methionine and purine bases increased the adenine content in cells in the glucose-urate medium but that this activity was not revealed in the glucose-NH_3 medium.Uricase production was repressed by an addition of adenine, methionine or purine bases, and was not recovered while growth of the bacteria was recovered by additions of various nutrients in the medium. Only addition of AMP in a medium containing methionine increased uricase production. When bacteria were cultured in an arsenite-added medium, both growth of these bacteria and uricase production were increased. An addition of vitamines to a medium containing adenine recovered from growth retardation, but the effect of these vitamines on the recovery of the uricase production was little.
