Several physiological properties of Cladosporium and pathogenic species of Hormodendrum classified as Phialophora by Emmons et al., viz. Hormodendrum or Phialophora pedrosoi etc., were studied.1. Almost all of the Cladosporium spp. studied were able to grow on a glucose medium containing sodium chloride at 10〜20%, with the exception of C. argillaceum and C. suaveolens which may be phylogenetically different from the others. While, all of the Hormodendrum spp. were incapable of growing on the same type of glucose medium containing salt at 5%.2. Among Cladosporia, the acid production was found in C. suavelones alone. Because of the fact that gas from glucose and hydrogen sulfide production in nutrient broth were found only in Oospora suaveolenes, it may be correct to conclude that this species is not idential with C. suaveolens in view of its peculiar mode of sporulation, as reported previously by the author.3. In general nitrite was less effective than nitrate for the growth of these strains, with the exception of some strains of C. cladosporiodes and C. cucumerinum. Furthermore, it was pointed out that C. argillaceum was the only species unable to utilize nitrite.4. Since of melanine pigment production on the tannic acid-or gallic acid-malt agar by Cladosporium spp. varied considerably even among the strains of the same species, this melanine pigment production was not recognized as an adequate criterion to differentiate the species. A few strains of Hormodendrum failed to grow and growable strains of this genus were unable to produce the brown pigment.5. As the result of an assimilation test with fifteen kinds of aromatic compounds, C. resinae was the only species that was able to utilize phenol as sole source of carbon.6. No liqufaction of gelatin was detected in any pathogenic Hormodendrum spp.However, it was found that all Cladosporia except C. argillaceum, C. resinae fa. albidum and C. suaveolens were able to liquefy gelatin.7. The property of arbutin decomposition was not utilized as a criterion to distinguish Cladosporia from pathogenic Hormodendrum spp., because of few species of the latter produced a pale brown or vinaceous brown soluble pigment without addition of ferric ions.
