In Hokkaido, about 230,000 tons of white potato starch were produced by about 600 factories in 1965,and highly polluted wastes were discharged from these factories. As for the treating methods, there are soaking into soil, storing lagooning, the use of trickling filters and so forth.But the operating period of potato starch factory is very short (September-November) and most factories are relatively small. Therefore, it is difficult economically to install the equipments to treat waste water.In this study, the treatment of potato starch waste by the "Funsha-hoshiki" process, which was practiced on an industrial scale last year, was investigated.In the "Funsha-hoshiki" process waste was aerated by circulation and agitation of the surface of the waste so that a new surface was continually brought in contact with the atmosphere. Waste in the secondary tank was pumped up, then ejected over the surface of the waste in the aeration tank from the nozzle, as shown in Fig. 1 and 2. Oxygen is absorbed by the ejection and by the waste at the aeration tank surface.When the COD loading of the waste was 0.8〜2.7kg/m^3/day, the COD removal ratio of the waste was in the range of 74〜54% at 14〜16℃.The greates part of the operating cost of this "Funsha-hoshiki" process was the cost of power consumed to operate the two pumps. Electric power consumption per kilogram of COD removed was 0.67-0.23kWh/kg.
