The origin and development of biochemical engineering may be due primarily to the recent notoriuous expansion of many kinds of biochemical industries.Although biochemical engineering is somewhat similar to chemical engineering, the former category is characterized by the fact that it deals with specific physiological problems inherent in microbes. For this particular reason, many sorts of problems are remaining to be solved.Some of the problems relevant to the fermentation industry from the viewpoint of biochemical engineering were discussed and appreciated here. The points are summarized as follows : 1. The effects of temperature and time of sterilization on the rate of microbial death and in addition, the chemical changes, whatever on the components in the medium lead to a general conclusion that short-time and high-temperature sterilization are most recomendable.2. By improving properly the procedure of batch-type heat sterilization, the undesirable chemical changes of medium ingredients could be avoided in an experiment concerned with streptomycin fermentation which was carried out successfully by using the medium subjected to batch sterilization, that the glucose solution was sterilized apart from other compoments of the medium.3. Due attention must be paid to the concentration and uniformity of suspensions of undersirable spores in question. This means that the spores, once being aggregated, exert marked increase in heat resistance. Lastly the fact that pH value of a medium affects conspicuously the heat-resistance of any spores must be referred to. These subjects mentioned above were discussed at length.4. Inoculation and sterilization procedures depending on specific equipment were illustrated and classified into four categories.5. Specific valves which are most recommendable for the aseptic operation were briefly reviewed ; its further exploitation meeting with practical demand was stressed.
