Basic studies were carried out to produce design data for a process to concentrate the alchol distillate waste from sweet potatoes, and to evaluate the process. The experiment consisted of six parts and were concerned with the separation of suspended solids in the waste and with the evaporation of it. 1) Constant pressure filtration : Experimental equation of the mean specific resistance of the original waste and that of the oversized of 200 mesh screen were obtained, respectively.Original waste r_fm=1.52×10^9ΔP^<0.98> Oversized 200 mesh screen r_rm=1.03×10^9ΔP<0.93> 2) Centrifugal setting : Most suspended solids were settled by low centrifugal force (about 200G), and centrifugal effect and settling time had influence on moisture contents in the sediment zone (Fig. 5). 3) Centrifugal filtration : In case of centrifugal filtration of the concentrated waste, the higher the centrifugal force and the longer the filtration time, the lower the moisture content in cake obtained (Fig. 6). 4) Settling : The settling velocities of suspended solids were remarkably accerated due to the coagulation of small particles by screening (Fig. 7). 5) Wet screening : In order to evaluate the performance of the screening of the suspended solids, screening index n_1 was defined by the following equation. n_1=OU(C_tso-Cssf) (1-C_tsu)/F^2(C_tsf-C_ssf) (1-C_tsf) The value of U_m corresponding to maximum index was abot 500mm/min (Fig. 14). 6) Evaporation : The over-all heat transfer coefficients of boiling liquid in a vertical tube natural circulation evaporator were measured as listed in Table 2.
