We have isolated glutamic acid producing bacteria from farm soil. The taxonomic characters of the strains were studied and it was found that they belong to the genus Brebibacerium. The newly-isolated strains resemble Brebibacterium ammoniagenes in the points of ammonia production from urea, nitrate reduction to nitrite and optimum pH range, but they are distinguishable from the latter in the action on carbohydrates and the amino radical fixing. Therefore, we designatge our strains as Brevibacterium aminogenes nov. spec.
