The author concluded in the previous reports that fungisterol obtained from the mycelia of Penicillia , has a chemical constitution as △^<6,7,8,9,22,23>-ergostatriene-3β-ol, which is different in some respects from the studies of WINDAUS et al.Since fungisterol is accompanied with ergosterol and seems to be produced in various kinds of Eumycetes, the mechanism of its formation may be considered in the following three ways.1) Ergosterol leads by the inner molecular isomerisation of durble linkages to three isomers, of which the most stable form as fungisterol might be formed (see Fig. 1 in text).2) γ-Dihydroergosterol will be first produced by biochemical reduction of ergosterol. This compound changes into an intermediate of glycol type by oxidation, and leads to fungisterol accompanied with ergosterol-F, (see Fig. 2 in text).3) If acetoacetic ester is accepted as a unit of biochemical synthesis of sterol, it will form a cholesterol nucleus according to the hypothesis advanced by MIESCHER and WIELAND. Methyl group at the position of C_<24> in the side chain might produce a fundamental structure of C_<28> compound through an intermediate of pynacon type from two moles of acetoacetic ester (see Fig. 3 and Fig. 4 in text).Leaving the double linkage in B ring of steroid intact, the intermediate is reduced to fungisterol and ergosterol by the isomerisation of double bond at C_<22>. The hypothesis of the cholesterol formation has been confirmed in part by the experiments of BLOCH et al. and WOODWARD et al. with isotopic carbon, but the experimental base is not sufficient.Of these three hypotheses concerning the fungisterol formation, the third view seems to be most appropriate.
