In the presence of RANEY Nickel as catalyst, Ca-5-keto-d-gluconate which was prepared from d-glucose by the oxidative fermentation of Acetobacter suboxydans 621,could be hydrogenated under atomospheric or high pressure into the mixture of Ca-l-idonate and Ca-d-gluconate.l-idonic acid was separated as dibenzal-l-idonic acid and identified as its brucin salt. After removing benzaldehyde with ether, the filtrate was neutralized with CaCo_8 and Ca(OH)_2,and Ca-d-gluconate was obtained. The total yield of both acids was about 90〜93% (l-idonic acid 47%, d-gluconic acid 43%). Lastly, it was observed that, even in high pressure reduction, the mixture was not epimerized to Ca-l-gulonate and Ca-d-mannonate.The details of temperature and time used for the reduction of Ca-5-keto-d-gluconate are described.
