Drought-resistance differences of Chamaecyparis obtusa among tree size or genotypes were studied using the P-V curve method. There was no significant difference of ψ^<tip>_w among trees from July to April. However, the ψ^<tip>_w of the leaves of large trees was less than that of leaves of small trees from May to June in a stand with dry-soil conditions. The ψ^<tip>_w of three genotypes with different drought-resistances in the field also were measured. The ψ^<tip>_w of less drought-resistant genotypes was greater than that of other genotypes from May to June. Genotypes and large trees with smaller ψ^<tip>_w s are able to maintain their turgor under drier soil conditions. From these result it was concluded that the P-V curve method for the period from May to June is useful for predicting drought-resistance differences of obtusa trees.
