I have studied the bark of Ligustrum japonicum THUNB., from August to September, 1953. The results obtained are as follows : 1) We can find many lenticels on the bark, and the shape of each lenticel is vertically slender on the youngest bark of one year branch, but each lenticel on the older stem grows larger, expanding itself both sides and becomes a circle, in some cases changing into a horizontal ellipse.2) There are none of cork cells appearing on the cross section of the youngest part of the bark of one year branch, but we find on the cross section of the lower part of the same branch cork cells which developed with long and thin membrane, and they lie to the radial direction, arranging themselves in one layer. These cells come from the reproduction of cambium existing at the inner side of the epidermis. In accordance with the growth of the stem in diameter the number of the cell layer increases, and cork cells are flattened and irregularly shaped by the press resulting from the growth.3) Lenticels at the stem fully developed give birth within themselves to the first cork cambium, which produces cork cells. Then the second cork cambium is formed at innerside of the first layer, as soon as its living function becomes invalid. In a similar way, the third one comes at its further innerside, and the cork cells are gradually departed from the ones produced by the first cork cambium.4) The old stem bark of this plant is comparatively thin, and has the chloroplasts in the primary bast. We can see at this part many large groups of stone cells which come out far later than those of bast fibre. Groups of stone cells vary in shape, namely, one is a lump and another long or elliptical to the peripheral direction, and the latter is more frequent than the former. We can sometimes find bast fibre in these groups.5) The groups of the bast fibre are found in a large quantity at the secondary bast of the old stem bark. The size of shose groups is smaller than that of a stone cell group. Longshaped ones are more numerous than lumpy ones. They arrange themselves in an irregular order. There are sometimes small stone cells mixed among these groups.6) Crystals have never been found in the cork cells and in the bast parenchym of either the old stem bark or the young branch one.7) The barks of branches of more than 4 cm. in diameter and those of the old stems have in them many gulanules which turn brown by Sudan III. The substance which resembles to the bird-lime is more plentiful in the parenchym cells of the secondary bast than in the primary bast.
