1) In 1939. in the nursery of Dateyashiki. Hokkaido Forestry Experimental Station. some experiments on cuttings of Populus maximowiczii Henry. which is seen to be more bavourable in Japan for the silvicultural trees of such populus arts that have various uses. In this paper. the results of the studies on rooting and growth of cuttings in relation to cutting media are presented.2) Six media, used in this experiment are as follows : volcanic ash soil. loam. clay. sand. peat soil+sand and peat soil+loam.3) In March 23 : samples were chosen from the same year-old trees under the same conditions. that is. height of tree. shape of crown. growth conditions. bark and angle of branching. etc., and cuttings were taken from biennial branches about 1.0〜15 m under tree-top near a largest spreading branch and then planting was performed in April 28,when the snow had melted on the nursery.4) Rooting at 84 days after planting was most excellent in the volcanic ash soil and decreased in order of follows; Sand+peat soil. loam+peat soil, loam, clay and sand.5) It was simillar at 124 days after, also.6) The intensity of height growth of cuttings shows a positive corelation with the amount of nutritive substances in soil, 7) The meanlength and the mean width of leaves on each leaf-nodes and medias were showed most largely in the peat containing sandy medias, and this fact indicated that Populus Maximowizii has certain adaptation to peat soil.8) The development in fresh weight of the primary and secondary lateral roots, is most oigorous in peat soil+sand, so it is clear that peat soil accelerates most effectively the growth of roots of Populus Maximowiczii. It is found that Populus Maximowiczii also requires a large amount of air and nutrients.
