Since, early the year of 1903,the memorial age, when I have found, by the order, an experiments of thinnings in the younger stands of the "Karamatsu", in the National Forest of Iwamurta Local Forestry Office, Nagano Prefecture, the system of the thinning are of used in the national and private forestry in modern Japan. The thiuning, I have induced from the observations about the characteristics of the individual trees, the structural compositions of stand formation, through the observations, at that time, are not yet cautiously as the present one.In what part, are thus uncautiousness? Until the year of 1918,it does not keenly distinguished the height differences of the individual trees, the structural compositions of the stand formation, that is to say, the stand assumed as the homogenous one with respect of the heights of the trees, except any distinguishable part of the stand-environment.Since then, I have assumed any stand as the heterogeneous one ; in addition, the individual trees, as it seems as several groups on the stand floor, forming so called the "field" without any regard to whether the stand is the planted or the self-regenerating one. (the interpretations and the descriptions will be issued in the II part).From these facts, I have improved the thinning as it ought to be homologous to the complex stand fomation. This thinnings, I called the "Fukusorin Kanbatsu" (or "Kakuso Kanbatu") the tinnings for stratified stories. When there are much more stratifications in the stand canopy, I called the "Tasorin Kanbatsu", the thinningsf for the stand with very many stratified stories.Since, I have executed the above mentioned thinnings in the experimental plots for the thinnings, it found to acknowledge that the stand-formation with respect to the stand canopy and the growth of trees in the plots are improved.From the facts, I have tried to instruct the above mentioned the "Fukusorin Kanbatsu" for the local national forest officers both of Aomori (in the year of 1947) and Akita (in the year of 1948) Divisional Forest Offices, as a leader by the charge of these offices. In these cases, it was found that they could hardly to distinguish the stratifications of the stand canopy, that is to say, to acknowledge the heterogeneity of stand formation as much as I can hardly to observe the fact in time before the year of 1918.Thus, in order to remove such an incoveniences and irrationalities, I have explaind, at first, some of the logical inferences of modern mathematical statistics, of which R.A.Fisher published in his theory in the year of 1920 and after, and than some of the hints for the stratification as follows : (I) by the frequency distributions of individual trees by distinguishing the upper and lower stories respectively in the analytical table of the structure of stand formation, I called, (the correlation table with respect to the breast height diameter and the height, such as table Ib.(II) by the calculating mean height corresponding to the diameter classes, and the grand mean diameter and grand mean height.(III) dy plotting the mean heights corresponding to the diameter classes with respect to X=((x-b)W)/σ distinguishing the stories, where for the lower stories designated by E_1 aed the upper stories by E_2.(IV) by assuming the regression linear lines passing through the points of E_1,(where X<O) and through those of E_2 (where X>O), respectively.(V) then, we have these regression linear lines intersect at the point approximately corresponding to the grand mean height in the ordinate corresponding X=O, (grand mean diameter) such as in the plate.Thus far, for the practical view point, the grand mean diameter and grand mean height are used as a scale to discriminate the individual trees for the upper and the lower stories of the stand canopy.
