Based on the vegetational data from NOMOTO (1953), I tried to reveal the distributional trends of the major tree species (dominants and constants) by which community types may be recognized, in order to clarify the relations between the associations described by NOMOTO.Continuity between the associations are very remarkable (see Table 1), and it may be possible to say that a rather simple altitudinal sequence was found, at an association level, in the climax vegetation of the warm-temperate region of South-Western Shikoku, and that the proposed units represent respective steps intergrading each other in that vegetational sequence. It is true that the above-mentioned vegetational sequence itself needs to be ascertained by renewed intensive studies, but, for comparing communities with each other and systematizing the whole vegetation of Japan, such a sequence must be found and delimited in respective districts or regions, prior to the detailed discussions on floristic composition of communities, since the more vegetational data are accumulated, the more conspicuous will be continuity between communities.
