特定樹種の樹幹流による土壌の酸性化抑制作用 : ユリノキの場合

We found that the pH value of stem flow is always within the characteristic range of every tree species. Reports indicate that stem flow influences the soil pH value to a major degree. This time, we have studied the relationships of the pH values of stem fiow and soil, on the basis of this information. We used five forests whose initial conditions were almost the same at the times of reforestation ; Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica D. DON.), Japanese fir (Abies firma SIEB. and ZUCC.), Japanese beech (Fagus crenata BLUME.), Udai birch (Betula maximowiczii REGEL) and yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.). As the result, two edaphologic topics were listed : 1) The pH value of stem flow was the greatest in the yellow-poplar and Japanese beech (5.9〜6.6), the least in Japanese cedar (3.5〜4.1). A Iarge amounts of the bases were contained in the stem flow of yellow-poplar in comparison with other species. Not small amounts of the bases were contained in the stem flow of Japanese cedar too. We think that the reason for the small pH value in the stem flow of Japanese cedar was the increase of the amount of hydrogen ions derived from dessociated organic acid in water. 2) The pH value increased only in soil exposed to the stem flow of the yellow-poplar for a long term, in spite of the fact that all others decreased in comparison with control soil samples. This phenomenon could be caused by the cation exchange on the surface of the soil colloid, because the rate of base saturations (especially Ca and Mg) increased in the soil of the yellow-poplar in spite of the fact that all others decreased in comparisons with the controls. These two edaphologic topics mean that the stem flow of yellow-poplar has a suppressive or reformative action against soil acidification which progresses gradually with the respiration of plant roots.
