Pinus densiflora SIEB. et ZUCC. seedlings were grown in water cultures over two calendar years on two different nitrogen sources, ammonium and nitrate. Changes of some water extracted nutrients and total nutrients in seedlings were investigated in the early stage of a growing season. Total nitrogen concentration was greater in the NH_4-series (receiving NH_4-N) than in the N0_3-series (receiving N0_3-N). Ammonium nitrogen also was found more in the seedlings of the NH_4-series than in those of the N0_3-series. The concentrations of nitrate nitrogen were small compared with ammonium nitrogen in all cases. Potassium decreased in old needles, which flushed in the first year, and much was found in new needles, which flushed in the second year, in May. The concentration of sodium was small compared with potassium. In roots, however, it increased considerably in May. Almost all of the potassium and sodium were extracted with water. Total concentrations of calcium and magnesium, especially calcium, were greater in the N0_3-series than in the NH_4-series. The largest concentration of calcium was found in the old needles of each tree in every case. Insoluble calcium increased in old needles. The water-soluble percentage of magnesium was more than that of calcium, especially in needles. Phosphorus in needles and roots decreased in February. Phosphorus concentrations were greater in roots than in shoots. The concentrations of chlorine and sulfate sulfur also were greater in roots than in shoots.
