Ten years have passed since Germany decided to set up a liaison office in Tokyo to improve the flow of scientific information from Japan. The experience of doing information work within the Japanese environment shows, that though the access to information it is not always easy, there is no special barrier to foreigners. Of course the language barrier is still a major obstacle, preventing broad use of Japanese information in the home country. Some remarks are added on the ways, in which information work in both countries is promoted by government and nonprofit organizations. Unified systems even in the government supported field of scientific information seem difficult to be achieved. Education in the field of documentation rests mainly with the documentations societies in both countries.
