Visualization of Head-Disk Contact Using a Low Curie Temperature Media

Higher magnetic recording density requires further reduced head-disk spacing. The technology has reached such a level that the slider-disk contact is becoming a severe reliability concern in terms of both tribologically induced decay of the recorded signal and the mechanical robustness of the head-disk systems. On the other hand, the sensitivity and resolution of the conventional techniques proved to be not enough for the analysis of such contact. It is a need to explore new techniques for the visualization and analysis of such contact. The authors proposed a novel methodology to visualize the slider-disk contact in high density magnetic storage systems. The visualization is achieved by introducing a specially prepared magnetic disk with reasonable low Curie temperature of its magnetic layer. The magnetic layer is used to record the details of the slider-disk contact. The working principles, experimental setup, techniques used to increase image contrast and reduce the threshold level of such a technology are presented. The new technique is also used to reveal the details of slider-disk contact in various cases of disk drive operations, including slider-disk contact during track seeking operations and loading/unloading operations. The unique observations made by such technique confirm that the new technique is a convenient, effective and promising method for the investigations of slider-disk contact, even if the contacts are not so intensive and does not leave any signature observable by other existing tools, such as scanning probe microscope (SPM).
