Magnetic materials and coil wires to be used in nuclear environments are required to be resistant to radiation and heat. Hence Si-Fe alloys, soft iron, and pureiron are generally used, and martensitic stainless steels are also often used in cases where corrosion resistance in necessary. The coil windings are made of a ceramic-insulated Ni-clad Cu wire or a ceramic-insulated Pt wire. In pressurized water reactors (PWRs), a magnetic actuator is used to drive a control-rod, and a magnetic sensor system is used to detect the control-rod position. In fast breeder reactors (FBRs), electromagnetic sodium-flow meters and sodium pumps are widely used. Induction-type sodium level gauges are employed also. In nuclear fusion research, the magnetic field induced by a plasma current is measured by means of magnetic probes installed around the vacuum vessel.
