Structural Transition in Co/Ti and Co/Zr Multilayered Films

A thickness dependence of the structures and magnetooptical (MO) properties of Co/Ti (d_<Co>=1.0〜4.0nm, Δd_<Ti>=2.5) and Co/Zr (d_<Co>=1.5〜3.1nm, d_<Zr>=1.4〜6.8nm) multilayered films has been investigated by MO and optical spectroscopies and their computer simulations. All the prepared films turned out to have regions with mixed components of 0.3〜1.2nm thick near the interfaces. The Co/Ti and Co/Zr multilayers whose ferromagnetic sublayer thinner than a critical theinkness of 2.6 nm showed different magnetic properties from those of bulk Co and Co thin film. The reason for the difference is analyezed to be connected with a crystalline-to-nanocrystalline (or amorphous) structural transfotmation in the ferromagnetic sublayers.
