A new experimental setup for high resolution magneto-optical observation of magnetization reversal of thin magnetic films by means of the Kerr effect was developed. The size of the light spot is below 400 nm in diameter. Therefore, the magnetic behavior can be investigated very locally. Measuring up to three components of the magnetization using lock in technique by detecting the longitudinal, transverse, and polar Kerr signal coming from the identical point of the specimen, detailed information on the micromagnetic properties of magnetic samples can be revealed. We give a detailed description of the experiment and present some results of measurements on Co/Cu multi-layer films exhibiting giant magnetoresistance (GMR).
