Recently, the possible health effects of exposure to extremely low-frequency magnetic fields (ELFMFs) have caused considerable public concern. Several epidemiological studies of cancer in children and occupationally exposed adults have shown an association between an elevated risk of cancer and exposure to ELFMFs. The issue still remains controversial. This paper reviews studies, presented at meetings of the Bioelectromagnetics Society in the last three years, on cellular and molecular effects of ELFMFs at low magnetic flux densities. Reports disagree on the existence of such effects. We, therefore, believe that, initially, it is worthwhile investigating the biological effects of ELFMFs at high flux densities. We examined the effect of high-density ELFMFs (400 mT at 50 Hz) on the induction of mutations in the hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyl transferase gene of human melanoma MeWo cells. Increased mutant frequency was observed as a result of high-density ELFMF exposure.
